15th May 2003 - Golden to Lake Louise and back

1:30am: Wake up - it's too hot to sleep. About 8 degrees outside and 28 inside. The log fire's doing too good a job of keeping the place warm. Opened all the doors and windows to let the hot air out - no need to adjust the fire, it's almost out. There's a full moon tonight but not enough light for photos without a tripod. Half an hour later it's cooled sufficiently for us to get back to sleep.

8:30am: Wake up to the first really sunny day we've had since Vancouver. Decide to stay here an extra night.

11:30am: Stop at the Spiral Tunnels on the way to Lake Louise. This is where the trains spiral around themselves so that it's easier to climb and descent the steep gradients in this part of the Rockies. We waited for 15 minutes or so but no train turned up, so we had to be content with photos of the tunnel entrance and exit.

12:30pm: Lake Louise is almost completely frozen over, it's snowing, but we walk part way around (about 2km) anyway. It's white everywhere so the photos don't turn out too well. After the walk we head for the hotel and a cup of hot chocolate and some clam chowder.

4:00pm: Emerald Lake really is as green as it looks in the photos. The Natural Bridge is nearby - water has eroded the rock to form a bridge over the waterfall.

9:15pm: The sun sets behind the mountains. Half an hour later it's still bright enough to go for a walk and take some photos of the reflections in the swimming pond. No-one's swimming this time of year though :-)
