16th May 2003 - Golden to Drumheller

9:30am: A long drive today - we're off to Drumheller, home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, famous for the huge number of dinosaur skeletons found nearby.

10:45am: Arriving at the junction of Highway 1 and the Icefields Parkway, we decide to take the slower but more scenic Bow Valley Parkway as far as Banff. On the way, we stop at Johnston Canyon and walk to the lower falls, about an hour's walk.

1:15pm: Stop in Banff for lunch. It's a fairly ugly tourist trap so we don't stay long.

4:30pm: Horseshoe Canyon near Drumheller.

5:15pm: Tonight we're staying at Pearl's Country Cottages, a grain farm near Drumheller in southern Alberta. We're staying in the cabin. It's a flat and almost empty landscape, the only features being a few farm buildings and the omnipresent oil pumps. It's very cold and windy too with no trees to break the wind.

7:00pm: Ask about Internet access at the Visitor Info Centre. There is none, except for the library which is closed and doesn't open until 1:00pm tomorrow.

7:30pm: Dinner at a Greek restaurant, Stavros, which we've been told does good steak. It's Alberta beef and it is really good.
